Tejocotes, also known as Mexican hawthorn apples, are small, round fruits that look like miniature apples about the size of cherry tomatoes. Their smooth, golden-yellow skin often has natural speckles or light scarring, a characteristic that reflects their delicate nature and doesnt impact their quality or flavor. Inside, the cream-colored flesh is firm and slightly mealy with a sweet-tart flavor reminiscent of apricots and plums.

These fruits are a key ingredient in traditional Mexican recipes, especially during the holidays. Tejocotes are commonly simmered in a spiced cinnamon syrup for desserts and baked goods or added to ponche, Mexicos festive holiday punch. Their firm texture holds up well to cooking, making them ideal for preserving or incorporating into both sweet and savory dishes. A quick blanching helps to easily remove the skin before cooking.
